Joe Colombo

Joe Colombo (1930-1971), born Cesare Colombo, was an Italian industrial designer. Until 1941, he was educated at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan as a painter. Afterwards, he studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano until 1954.

Throughout his career, Colombo was most interested in living systems. Colombo’s futuristic modular furniture and containers reflect this interest, presenting a variability and self-sufficiency similar to qualities of a living system.

Colombo’s work has been exhibited at many museums, among them the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
