Paul Evans, Sculpted Bronze Console, USA, 1970

This large and impressive four-door Sculpted Bronze Console by Paul Evans from 1970 is one of the finest examples of this genre, commissioned directly from the Evans Studio. It has been in private hands for nearly 50 years. The exterior is boldly sculpted with large “rocks” and a multitude of unique deep decoration. This is Evans’ work at its best, combining a material and a technique never-before-seen with a free form, sculptural exterior and a functional use.

According to Constance Kimmerle, curator at the Michener Museum (“Paul Evans Crossing Boundaries and Crafting Modernism” at the James A. Michener Museum and Cranbrook Art Museum), “the Sculpted Bronze technique combined traditional craft with innovative techniques and materials as well as spontaneous free expression. This experimental technique involved applying epoxy resin over the plywood base; the resin was then sculpted in a freehand form, sandblasted, and coated with sprayed melted atomized bronze.” This exact technique inspired by the technique used to repair the hulls of ships in the Philadelphia ship yards has not been replicated since. Very good original condition.
