T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings Bleached Mahogany Table, USA, 1961
A Custom Table or Desk in Mahogany designed by T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings for a commission for Philip Johnson, USA/Athens, Greece, 1961
A gorgeous custom bleached mahogany table or desk designed by T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings and built by Saridis of Athens. The table, with its classical fretwork on the legs and apron, was designed by Gibbings at the request of Philip Johnson for a Johnson-designed penthouse apartment and executive office in Toronto in 1961. The Greek furniture manufacturer Saridis produced a line of pieces for Gibbings and executed custom commissions such as this one. The Johnson-designed penthouse was built in a Mies Van der Rohe building in Toronto for the Torno family and has historical designation as a rare example of modern architecture. The table has been restored to it’s original bleached finish – exquisitely done giving the mahogany a bone coloration with matte finish and open grain.
