Phillip Lloyd Powell Sculpted Walnut Three Seat Sofa, USA, 1960s
Phillip Lloyd Powell (1919 – 2008) Sculpted Walnut Three Seat Sofa, USA, 1960s
This rare, one-of-a-kind three-seat sofa from Phillip Lloyd Powell is a prime example of Powell’s sensitivity towards wood and displays his talent for quality construction techniques. Blind mortise and tenon joinery and a hand-carved pass-through for the upholstered back cushion all display Powell’s high level of craftsmanship. The hand-carved back defines each seat with ideal proportions for comfort and back support. The sides are finished in chip-carving, a signature Powell technique. As always the contour of the hand-chipping relates to the movement of the grain and works around the natural density patterns of the wood. The exposed nail heads are also a rare but significant feature. Beautifully designed, the solid walnut frame has newly upholstered cushions in light grey velvet.
Excellent original condition.
