Niamh Barry’s Walking is the artist’s first standing screen light sculpture within her exquisite repertoire of unique, handmade illuminated art. Barry’s work highlights, both literally and figuratively, the various ways by which we can interpret human movement, light and darkness, negative and positive space. Based off of the traced motion of legs in motion, Walking is a visual study of movement; while depicting movement it also stimulates it, inspiring the viewer to walk around the sculpture in order to experience it differently from every angle. Made of hand-formed mirror-polished patinated and polished bronze, glass opal tiles, and dimmable LEDs, Walking glistens, emits, and reflects light and shadow across a space.
As Barry works on a commission basis, a bespoke version of Walking, including a suspended or wall-mounted sculpture, can be made with custom dimensionality, materials, and finishes.
Niamh Barry was born in 1968 in Dublin, Ireland where she currently works and lives. Upon graduation from the National College of Art and Design in 1991, Barry established her studio and started to make unique conceptual furniture and light sculptures from a range of materials including aluminum, porcelain, linen, mirror, acrylic, wood, patinated hand-formed bronze, mirror-polished bronze, and Murano glass. Since the debut of the critically acclaimed Fouette light sculpture, Barry has transformed her repertoire to include free-form contours, hand-hammered vessels, and geometric angles. Gaining critical attention from designers, curators, and collectors today, Barry’s work is currently being commissioned worldwide and exhibited at art fairs internationally. Her light sculptures reside in public and private collections nationally and internationally, including the Four Seasons Hotel, O2, Candy and Candy, Merrion Hotel, Shelbourne Hotel, Finchatton, and U2.
