Gary Magakis, Blackened Steel and Bronze Console with Cantilevered End Cabinets, USA, 2014
Gary Magakis’ blackened steel and bronze console reflects the sculptor’s distinct approach to creating bold and dense geometric forms that exude a Modernist elegance and buoyance. At once a functional object and a work of art, the console is designed to suggest weightlessness while retaining a muscular visual power. The dynamic relationship between the lightness of the console’s cantilevered forms and its sturdy, dense materials creates an ideal aesthetic equilibrium.
Inspired by Constructivism and Frank Lloyd Wright’s cantilevered rooms, Magakis channels architectural elements in his work. Though each of the console’s three bronze and three steel sections initially appears sharp, the sections are actually gracefully curvilinear. Magakis’ unique sculptural furniture was featured in the Financial Times’ How to Spend It in April of 2015.
As the artist works on a commission basis, custom dimensionality and finishes may be accommodated.
