Gary Magakis, Blackened Steel and Bronze Console with Cantilevered End Cabinets, USA, 2014
Gary Magakis’ blacked steel and bronze console epitomizes the sculptor’s distinct approach to creating bold metal and dense geometric forms that simultaneously exude an elegant, buoyant aesthetic of Modernism.
Inspired by Constructivism and the cantilevered rooms by Frank Lloyd Wright, Magakis channels architectural elements in design while tapering each of his forms uniquely. Though each of the console’s three solid bronze and three solid steel sections appear sharp at first glance, they are actually gracefully curvilinear, as the entire piece lacks any straight lines or edges. Magakis’ cantilevered end cabinets allow the taut 6-paneled, 5-door console to float; this levity, which further contrasts to the striated steel and bronze, renders the piece at ideal aesthetic equilibrium.
