“Pendulum”, A Black and White Platinum Print on Double Weight Paper  by John Hersey, USA, 2005

Beauty has always been the main element of John Hersey’s work and he has looked to the great photographers like Jacques Henri Lartigue and Richard Avedon whose chic Parisian women embody that for Hersey; as well as the sensual and erotic nudes of Bill Brandt and Helmut Newton.

Hersey was born in 1943 in New York City to author/journalist John Hersey and Francis Ann Cannon. Hersey practiced drawing under Victor de Pau in East Hampton, NY before entering Yale University as an Art and Architecture major. In 1965, John Hersey received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale and entered the Yale Graduate School of Architecture and established a painting studio in a barn in New Haven. During his time at Yale Hersey studied photography under Walker Evans, the celebrated American photographer. In 1970, Hersey relocated to Paris, France for a year and a half and to Rome (visiting the American Academy for three months), and l’Isole d’Elba, Italy before returning to New York City to establish a painting and photography studio in the up-and-coming SoHo neighborhood. Hersey built a dark room in this studio and continued to pursue photography while completing large-scale paintings.
