Niamh Barry’s Binary series references a system of objects in space— two floating entities so close that their gravitational interaction causes them to orbit about a common center of mass. Composed of Niamh Barry’s signature hand-formed bronze rings, the piece features opal glass tiles covering strips of LED lights that emit a soft, warm glow. Experienced differently from every angle at which the viewer stands, Binary II not only suggests movement, but also elicits the viewer’s own movement around the work.
Niamh Barry was born in 1968 in Dublin, Ireland, where she still works and lives. In 1991, upon her graduation from the National College of Art and Design, Barry established her studio practice. Barry creates unique, limited edition light sculptures and furniture made from a wide range of materials. In her signature works, visual weight and movement are constant themes.
Since the beginning of her artistic career with Todd Merrill Studio in 2012, Barry has risen to prominence in the art and design world, becoming one of the most sought-after figures working in LED light sculptures today. Barry was profiled in Architectural Digest and Galerie Magazine and her work is included in many public and private collections in both the United States and abroad including the Four Seasons Hotel, Candy and Candy, Merrion Hotel, Shelbourne Hotel, Finchatton, the Ritz Carlton, and U2’s own collection. Most recently, Barry was the recipient of the 2017 Award for Best Lighting in Image Interiors and Living Magazine.
