Niamh Barry, Black Poise Suspended Light Sculpture, IRE, 2016
Niamh Barry’s latest work, Black Poise, is a spectacular new monumental LED and bronze light sculpture that floats effortlessly in perfect harmony of material and form. The suspended, sinuous structures are inspired by human movement and displayed so as to be experienced from every angle, igniting our own motion around them. This 7’ long work incorporates interlocking black patinated bronze rings with three hand-raised bronze vessels. The interiors of the vessels are finished in polished copper and illuminated by a glow of hidden dimmable LED lights. Like Barry’s celebrated earlier works, Black Poise is a feat of handcrafted metalwork that perfectly illuminates Barry’s mastery of balance and movement.
Niamh Barry was born in 1968 in Dublin, Ireland, where she still works and lives. In 1991, upon graduation from the National College of Art and Design, Barry established her studio and began to make unique conceptual furniture and light sculptures from a range of materials including aluminum, porcelain, linen, mirror, and acrylic as well as wood, black patinated hand-formed solid bronze, mirror-polished hand-formed solid bronze, and opal glass. In her signature works, visual weight and movement are constant themes. All custom pieces are available with dimmable LED lighting.
Since the inception of her artistic career with Todd Merrill Studio in 2012, Barry has ascended the art and design world, becoming one of the most sought-after figures working in LED light sculptures today. Barry was profiled in Architectural Digest and Galerie Magazine and her work is included in many public and private collections nationally and internationally, including the Four Seasons Hotel, Candy and Candy, Merrion Hotel, Shelbourne Hotel, Finchatton, and the Ritz Carlton. Most recently, Niamh Barry was the recipient of the 2017 Award for Best Lighting in Image Interiors and Living Magazine.
Todd Merrill Studio has published a 90-page full-color catalogue dedicated to Niamh Barry’s sculptural lighting featuring essays by Todd Merrill, Bella Neyman, and Jennifer Scanlan.
