Niamh Barry, Black Poise Suspended Light Sculpture, IRE, 2016
Black Poise is a spectacular bronze light sculpture that floats effortlessly in perfect harmony of material and form. The suspended, sinuous structure is inspired by human movement and displayed so as to be experienced from every angle, eliciting the viewer’s own motion around the work. Black Poise’s interlocking black patinated bronze rings feature three hand-raised bronze vessels. The interiors of the vessels are finished in polished copper and illuminated by a glow of hidden dimmable LED lights. Like Barry’s celebrated earlier works, Black Poise is a feat of handcrafted metalwork that perfectly illuminates Barry’s mastery of balance and movement.
Niamh Barry was born in 1968 in Dublin, Ireland, where she still works and lives. In 1991, upon her graduation from the National College of Art and Design, Barry established her studio practice. Barry creates unique, limited edition light sculptures and furniture made from a wide range of materials. In her signature works, visual weight and movement are constant themes.
Since the beginning of her artistic career with Todd Merrill Studio in 2012, Barry has risen to prominence in the art and design world, becoming one of the most sought-after figures working in LED light sculptures today. Barry was profiled in Architectural Digest and Galerie Magazine and her work is included in many public and private collections in both the United States and abroad including the Four Seasons Hotel, Candy and Candy, Merrion Hotel, Shelbourne Hotel, Finchatton, the Ritz Carlton, and U2’s own collection.
