Ian Spencer and industrial designer Cairn Young together form the Yard Sale Project, through which they produce one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture that combine the highly accomplished technical design of Cairn Young with the master craftsmanship of Ian Spencer. The Roccapina VI chair challenges the traditional view of what a chair should look like: it has a smooth carved front and a jagged free form back comprised of many types of hardwood, giving the surface a crisp patchwork quality with both light and dark colors. The chair is made from an astonishing array of twenty-six hardwoods. The process by which the woods are combined has been uniquely developed and applied on a large scale by Yard Sale Project in the Roccapina series.
Yard Sale Project’s “Roccapina V” Chair – nearly identical to Roccapina VI – is currently on view in “Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft, and Design” at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, NY (March 19, 2013- September 15, 2013). Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. Florida (October 12, 2013 – January 20, 2014), and the Bellevue Arts Museum, Washington (March 7, 2014 – June 30, 2014).
