Gio Ponti

Gio Ponti

Gio Ponti (1891-1979) was an Italian architect, industrial designer, furniture designer, artist, and publisher who revolutionized the worlds of architecture and design.

Ponti took his first job with an Italian ceramics company. It is possible that his early career in ceramics design influenced the rest of his career, as Ponti never viewed architecture as simply creating buildings. Instead, he considered the buildings’ interiors as well, creating furnishings, lighting, and decor that complemented the architectural features. Ponti’s goal was to integrate the worlds of art and architecture, believing a building should both serve a functional purpose and be an aesthetically pleasing addition to a city.

In 1928, Ponti founded Domus magazine, one of the leading design publications today.
