Todd Merrill Studio began representing renowned UK-based designer Marc Fish in 2013. Fish has long been fascinated with the natural world. Whether by conceiving of and creating new materials, or re-writing old methods, he is uniquely fueled by the ambition to bend a material to his will to achieve his ultimate vision, as if creating his own new organism and all of its structures.
Fish’s use of the best timbers and veneers, his understanding of metal fabrication, and his attention to detail have set him apart from the standard cabinetmaker. Having been widely recognized as a master craftsman of wood, Fish’s recent works make clear that as an artist, he has transcended any material restrictions. In his studio, Fish’s interest in materiality has always been driven by innovation and experimentation. As his work takes on a distinctly more mixed media approach, what is most successful is that his aesthetic does not change, the influence is still incredibly strong – a pursuit of a pure organic fluidity no matter the what material.
Constantly striving to transcend the boundaries of art, design, sculpture, and furniture, his sublimely unique works possess a timelessness that could fit seamlessly into the most contemporary of settings or the most traditional. While his curvilinear forms may harken back to Art Nouveau, his process pushes the limits of 21st Century furniture design.
Fish began making furniture twenty years ago in his studio. After studying with some of the best fine furniture makers in the UK, he received two distinctions from City & Guilds in Furniture Making and Computer Aided Design. His flair and natural ability set him apart as a designer/maker to look out for in the future. Fish has been awarded four Guild Marks by The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, and the Claxton Stevens award in 2011 for the best guild mark issued in 2010. In 2015 Marc won first prize at Cheltenham Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design.
