A Pair of Shagreen Chairs in the Manner of André Groult, France, c. 1940s

A pair of elegant shagreen chairs upholstered in a silver-green silk. The chairs’ beautiful curves and subtle sunburst design were clearly created by the hand of an expert craftsman.

André Groult was the undisputed master of French Art Deco furniture. He is best known for his design of a woman’s bedchamber for the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925. For this bedroom, he designed furniture in white shagreen, inspiring an American client living in Paris at the time to commission a suite of furniture from Groult in green shagreen. These chairs closely resemble the set that Groult created for this commission.
