John Dickinson, Square “African” Plaster End-Table, USA, c. 1976-1980

A beautifully preserved plaster “African” end-table by John Dickinson.  One of his most popular and recognizable designs, Dickinson produced these tables from 1976 to 1980. These monochromatic pieces were constructed from a plaster-like high strength cement and then painted.  The handmade texture was the result of Dickinson’s experience with clay molding.  While the lack of color in Dickinson’s work may initially have appeared bland, his work was anything but that, with its classical forms and different styles combined in a modern, utilitarian way.

Today, Dickinson’s work feels even more relevant than it did in 70s and 80s as the market for unique, handcrafted, studio art furniture continues to rise.  Dickinson’s works are in a number of important museums and institutions and sought after by collectors world-wide.
