Paul Evans Rare Custom Studio Sculpted Bronze Dining Suite
Paul Evans Rare Custom Studio Sculpted Bronze Dining Suite – Todd Merrill
This rare dining suite comprises a dining table, 6 side chairs, 2 arm chairs, and a bench. The whole was commissioned in 1971 by a client of Evans to be a unique custom group in Sculpted Bronze. Each piece in the group – every chair, table and bench is individually signed PE 72, the chairs have additional paper labels and the original 5 page correspondence between the Evans Studio in New Hope and the client come with the group. The suite was completed and delivered in 1972 and retains the original copper colored velvet suggested by John Case at the Evans Studio to compliment the suite. The group is in perfect original museum quality condition. Although a buyer for practical purposes may want to reupholster the suite, which Todd Merrill’s workshop will do.
The table design is a model done by Evans for Directional but is uniquely sculpted and combined with custom designed chairs (proposed in sketches to the client) the bench as well is a unique custom piece. The whole was made together as is evident from the paper work and the matching signatures on all pieces. The whole suite is in Sculpted Bronze, the proprietary technique developed by Paul Evans. The frames in steel and wood are covered in heavy resin called “goop” then hand sculpted and finished with a skin of sprayed on atomized bronze. The bronze skin was then patinated with carbon and lacquered. This group features dynamic surface sculpture done by Evans so that every piece compliments the next. Offered only as a full original group.
