Paul Evans, Argente Desk, USA, c. 1968
Signed “Paul Evans 67” this adaptable desk is composed of a Pennsylvania slate top resting on two checker patterned pedestals. Two rolling file cabinets can be positioned beneath the desktop for a compact workspace, or exposed for a more spacious environment.
The side and back panels of each cabinet mimic the surface decoration of the desk’s base creating a cohesive design at each angle. The cabinet’s drawers are faced with a patchwork of blackened aluminum tiles and ornamented with five individually sculpted drawer pulls embellished with a radial star design.
As a unique work of functional art, this superlative desk is idiosyncratic and distinctly practical.
