Paul Evans, Argente Side Table Pair with Drawers, USA, 1967
These unique Paul Evans 2 and 3 drawer side table / nightstands, dated 1967, are faced with a patchwork of blackened aluminum tiles and ornamented with five individually sculpted drawer pulls, embellished with a radial star design. Created for a private collector, the works fall under the title Argente (Latin for silver). Created between 1965 and 1972, Evans’ Argente pieces were characterized by the juxtaposition of opaque black and reflective silver populated by pictographic patterns. Argente was one of Evans’ shortest lived and now one of the most highly sought-after series of works.
As unique works of functional art, these dynamic chests are both idiosyncratic and distinctly practical.
