Paul Evans Console Forged-Front Wall-Mounted Four Door 1965

An unusual early custom Studio four-door, Forged-front, sculpted steel console signed and dated by Paul Evans in 1965. Forged Front is the original term used in the Evans Studio for these consoles, they have since been called Sculpted Steel or Sculpted-front consoles. The large projectile elements on the front of the console are made of hand-forged steel hence the name. The multiple sculptural elements on this console represent the accumulated language of visual elements that were developed by Paul Evans. This console was made very early in the series and involved much direction from Evans accounting for the complex and dense grid of sculpture.

The painted decoration was applied by Robert “Bobby Cool” Thompson, an African-American artist employed by Evans to paint his “skins”, as they called the surface of the sculpted work in the studio. The color palette of this console developed by Evans and Bobby Cool is inspired by the natural scenery around New Hope, PA; golden and autumnal tones of late summer subtly mix with pale blue, white and gilded highlights, all grounded with black pigment which fuses the color palette to the steel sculptural elements.
