A Wall Hung Sculpture Front Console by Paul Evans. USA, 1967.
A Wall Hung Sculpture Front Console by Paul Evans. USA, 1967. A rare wall-hung sculpture front console that can also be placed on a custom base with the original Pennsylvania slate top. These sculpture front consoles were designed and built out of welded steel in the original New Hope, PA workshop specifically as custom commissions. They are considered to be the most successful and most highly sought after pieces from the Evans studio. This console features four unique 24″ x 20″ doors, each with a complex arrangement of sculptural elements in grid work frames.
The sculptural elements are covered in red, purple, green, yellow, and blue polychrome with gold leaf and black patinated accents. The top is a single slab of original grey slate. The case is covered in a patchwork of deep brown and black painted and oxidized patchwork metal. The case sides and center are wrapped in heavy steel straps with bolts and large hinges holding the doors. The interior is in red striated lacquer with green felt shelves. This console is made particularly rare by the three gold leafed pull-out drawers behind the far right door. Each drawer features a hand sculpted pull in welded steel. Console is signed in welded script “PAUL EVANS 67”.
