Paul Evans Custom Polished-Steel Cylinder Closet. USA, 1980.
Paul Evans Custom Polished-Steel Cylinder Closet. USA, 1980. A unique custom commission high-polished steel half-cylinder closet in two parts designed in 1980 by Paul Evans and produced by Dorsey Reading for a Sutton Place penthouse. This wall mounted half-cylinder closet is a genius storage concept. Each half of the cylinder attaches by piano hinge to the wall – closed they form a striking sculptural high polished steel cylinder – each opens to reveal beautiful storage space for shoes, clothing and personal items all custom fitted in black felt.
Original documentation and a letter from Paul Evans included with these pieces. Evans was commissioned in 1979 to decorate the entire apartment at 2 Sutton place – walls, floors and ceilings as well as all furnishings. What he produced was a high concept apartment with gold raw silk walls alternating with beige gold acrylic ceilings all with recessed lighing, built-ins, suede upholstered seating and chrome accents. This piece has been meticulously maintained. The best of the last of Evans work – true chic late 70s disco era furniture. Highest possible custom construction.
