Phillip Lloyd Powell, New Hope Chair and Ottoman, USA, c. 1960
This immaculate Phillip Lloyd Powell New Hope chair and ottoman, c. 1960 features is constructed of his signature hand carved walnut. The soft leather upholstery is supported by canvas webbing. Born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, Phillip Lloyd Powell (1919-2008) began crafting furniture during his adolescent years. Creating some of the most important works of the mid-century studio furniture movement, Powell’s signature carved wood cabinets, consoles, chairs, and dining tables are some of the most sought-after pieces from that era. His sinuous, textural furniture often references natural forms. This unique chair has all of the hallmarks of the American craft resurgence of the mid-1960s which Powell was instrumental in invigorating – small studio production, a disavowal of prefabrication, and reverence for materials.
