Vladimir Kagan, Custom Floating Sofa, USA, 1969
Commissioned directly from Vladimir Kagan Inc. in 1969 (documentation included), this curved floating sofa was a custom commission, and is the only one of its kind. With a rounded back and sleek low profile the sofa rests on plexiglass bases. Kagan began incorporating plexiglass into his designs in the mid-1960s, further perfecting his intention of weightless organic forms. This sofa is newly upholstered with an incredibly luxurious off-white ermine. Kagan was one of America’s most prolific and beloved furniture designers. He introduced a multitude of furnishings that are now considered icons of mid-century modern design. His custom commissioned works are some of the most desirable of vintage Kagan. His style, inspired by everything from antiques and nature to the Bauhaus, emphasizes comfort, functionality, and modernity.
