Karl Springer, Pair of Parsons Goatskin Side Tables, USA, c.1980s

A beautiful pair of Parsons style side tables made with a free form inlay of natural ivory goatskin and sealed with polyester lacquer.

Springer’s elegant form is inspired by the iconic Parsons table, a design developed by Jean-Michel Frank in the 1930s at the Parsons Paris School of Art, then known as the Paris Atelier. A New York Times article explains, “Frank challenged students to design a table so basic that it would retain its integrity whether sheathed in gold leaf, mica,  parchment, split straw or painted burlap, or even left robustly  unvarnished.”

In the Museum of Modern Art’s 2009-2010 exhibition Bauhaus:1919 to 1933, a Parsons table, noted as a Children’s table by Marcel Breuer, is  documented in a photograph dating the table to 1923.

Fore more references, a chapter on Karl Springer can be found in Todd Merrill’s “Modern Americana: Studio Furniture from High Craft to High Glam” ( Rizzoli, 2008).
