Mira Nakashima, Keisho III, USA, 2003

The unique pieces of furniture and works of art produced by Mira Nakashima continue the legacies of both the Nakashima Studio and the larger studio craft movement. The studio, founded by Mira’s father, George Nakashima, one of the most accomplished furniture makers in American history, maintains its unique character under the leadership of his daughter.

Keisho III is a wonderful example of the exquisite craftsmanship and love of material that characterize the Nakashima Studio’s style. Keisho III’s commanding presence is softened by the warm tones of the walnut, and the wood’s natural imperfections provide visual interest. The sculpture’s two rosewood butterfly keys are common features of Nakashima designs.

Keisho III has been exhibited at the Mingei International Museum in San Diego, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts in Idaho, and the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.
