Joseph Walsh, Enignum VIII Dining Table, IRE, 2012

Joseph Walsh’s signature woodworking technique is based on a principle to allow pieces to evolve and grow, rather than adhere to specific predetermined forms. In the Enignum series, Joseph Walsh strips wood into thin layers, manipulating and reconstructing them into free-form compositions. The layers are then hand-carved to reveal both the honesty of the structure as well as of the sculpted form, which is a unique collaboration between man and material. The series’ title derives from the Latin words Enigma (mystery) and Lignum (wood). These terms, according to Walsh, “sum up the series: the mystery of the composition lies in the material”.

The 11 foot long Enignum VIII Dining Table features geometric details on its top, offering a striking balancing to the organic forms found within ash’s natural finish and the sinuous curves that constitute its base.
