Beauty has always been John Hersey’s main inspiration. In his pursuit of beauty, he has looked to the sensual, erotic nudes and chic Parisian women of great photographers including Bill Brandt, Helmut Newton, Jacques Henri Lartigue, and Richard Avedon.

John Hersey was born in New York City in 1943. Hersey studied drawing under Victor de Pau in East Hampton, New York before matriculating at Yale University as an Art and Architecture major. During his time at Yale, Hersey studied photography under Walker Evans, the celebrated American photographer. In 1965, John Hersey received his undergraduate degree and entered the Yale Graduate School of Architecture, establishing a painting studio in a barn in New Haven. In the early 1970s, Hersey established a painting and photography studio in the then up-and-coming SoHo neighborhood of New York City. Hersey continues to pursue photography while completing large-scale paintings.
