The 5 Drawer George pays homage to historic design through new innovations in wood carving technology.

The exterior structure of 5 Drawer George has been meticulously chipped away to reveal an interior shape that emulates traditional Georgian furniture styles. Across his repertoire, Neal combines CNC technology and three-dimensional computer drawing with traditional techniques in wood carving to create unique contemporary interpretations of historic subject matter. Neal’s works can be seen as “contemporary relics,” reawakening interest in the historic while offering a fresh approach to contemporary design.

Featured in public and private collections worldwide, Neal has both literally and figuratively shaped a new era in design and craftsmanship. Currently, Neal is collaborating with Zaha Hadid on a line of innovative sculptures inspired by ancient vessels. Neal’s 5-Drawer George was part of the critically-acclaimed exhibition, “Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft, and Design,” hosted by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, NY; the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and the Bellevue Arts Museum in Bellevue, Washington. His George III Chest resides in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. In 2016, Big George was exhibited at the distinguished Winter Antiques Show in New York, NY.

As the artist works on a commission basis, custom dimensionality and finishes may be accommodated.
