Gildas Berthelot Console – Todd Merrill

“Why not, le commencement” are a pair of unique wall-mounted consoles by Gildas Berthelot that form a single composition. Expertly hand-carved by Gildas Berthelot, the consoles are subtly rounded in the front and tapered on the sides.

Born in Paris, Gildas Berthelot studied at the prestigious École Supérieure Nationale des Beaux-Arts under the important French sculptor, Georges Jeanclos. Serving as his mentor, Jeanclos exposed Berthelot to contemporary design thereby forever changing his outlook on art. From that point on, Berthelot’s goal was to achieve a synthesis between cabinetmaking and sculpting. Berthelot’s pieces are organic in form and inspired by flora and fauna. His work is part of the collection of the Fine Art Museum of Quebec, and in 2011 he was awarded a research grant from the Conseil des Arts et des lettres du Québec. He has also taught at the École d’ébénisterie d’art de Montréal. Berthelot currently resides in Montreal.
