Stefan Rurak, Patchwork Brass Club Chairs, USA, 2022

Stefan Rurak’s furniture defies conventional boundaries – merging fine art aesthetics, modern conceptual design, and traditional, hand-made craftsmanship techniques. Working with a variety of materials – wood, cast concrete, and steel –  Rurak draws no distinction between art and design – the utilitarian becoming a canvas for his aesthetic endeavor. His ability to constantly stretch the limits of traditional media, along with his engineering and technical knowledge, have made him a rare commodity and kept him in demand with collectors, designers, architects worldwide. His latest works of seating are inspired by the dense forms of Brutalism and employ a modern technique using innovative materials to create a new lightweight surface that mimics the look and feel of patinated brass. Rendered in wood, fiberglass, and plaster the works are finished with an industrial coating that employs suspended brass particals to create a true metal surface. An applied patina is left to cure for two weeks to achieve the rich Tiffany Blue color. The entire work is sealed with enamel, essentially freezing the patina in time. Welded steel seams produce the image of a patchwork collage of metal panels. This bold collection of seating typifies Rurak’s one-of-a-kind works  built to span generations.
