A spectacular Sculpture-Front console signed and dated Paul Evans, 1966.
A spectacular Sculpture-Front console signed and dated Paul Evans, 1966. Purchased by the original owner from the America House in New York City. The console is one of the most powerful examples of Evans signature Sculpture-Front technique ever to come to market. The console features four unique 22″ x 20″ doors, each with a complex arrangement of sculptural elements in grid work frames. The sculptural elements are covered in treated paint in reds, purple, green, yellow and blue with gold leaf and black patinated accents.
The top is a single slab of original grey slate. The case is covered in a patchwork of deep brown and black painted and oxidized metal shingles. The case sides and center are wrapped in heavy steel straps with bolts and large hinges holding the doors. The interior is in red-grained lacquer with green felt shelves. The interior side of the doors are glazed in red and feature a deep geometric design that is worthy of being of the front of any other console. The whole console sits on the original single metal base giving it height and presense unlike any console of this type yet seen.
