Tjitske Storm is a renowned contemporary fiber artist whose captivating tapestries bridge the worlds of nature, craftsmanship, and modern technology. Known for her intricate digital collages that are transformed into striking woven and hand-tufted works, Tjitske explores the dynamic interplay between organic forms and geometric patterns, reimagining traditional techniques through a modern lens. By integrating high-resolution photography, digital design, emotional expression and ancient tactile methods, she creates pieces that resonate with a sense of harmony and ecological awareness, inviting the viewer to reconnect with the natural world.
Tjitske’s journey in the creative field began with her graduation from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute in 2009, where she developed a passion for surface design, particularly patterns, prints, and textiles. These interests became central to her early collections, which focused on the development of textile-based designs. After completing her studies, Tjitske established her own design practice, creating projects within fashion and leading a creative workspace for other artists in Amsterdam. During this time, she also worked as a freelance editor and stylist for the international WeAr Global Magazine.
Her work at Marcel Wanders Studio from 2014 to 2016 marked a key phase in her career, where she honed her expertise in surface pattern and graphic design for bespoke product and interior projects. This experience, combined with her independent projects for esteemed companies like Moooi, Ted Baker, and Studio Marcel van Doorn, helped shape her unique approach to design, blending digital artistry with traditional craft. Over the years, Tjitske’s practice has expanded globally, with collaborations in Cape Town, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, as well as remote partnerships with clients worldwide.
Tjitske’s tapestry collections—The Art of Living Together, Human Nature and The Seasons—embody her fascination with evolution, symbiosis, and the interconnectedness of species, nature and humanity. The former explores the intricate relationships between animals, plants, and fungi, while the latter celebrates the beauty of the natural world through a striking visual language. By combining hundreds of high-resolution photographic images with the ancient craft of Jacquard weaving and blending digital illustrations with ancestral hand-tufting, Tjitske’s work celebrates both the digital and tactile, the abstract and the detailed, creating artworks that transcend traditional boundaries.
Currently residing in Oosterwold, a community near Amsterdam, Tjitske embraces a lifestyle of sustainability and connection with nature. The neighborhood’s focus on urban agriculture and biodiverse housing aligns with her philosophy of living in harmony with both the environment and her neighbors. This desire to reconnect with nature is central to her artistic practice, which aims to “rewild the world”—re-establishing a deeper bond between humanity and the natural world.
