In partnership with Mark Eckman, President of Karl Springer LTD, Todd Merrill has curated a selection of Karl Springer’s most iconic designs to be reissued exclusively at Todd Merrill Studio.
Though Springer’s designs drew on European classical forms, he developed an irreverent and non-doctrinaire American accent: bold proportions, exotic finishes, and a glamorous, high-gloss palette that made him a favorite of American clients. His work captures the confidence and energy of the 1970s and now finds a renewed relevance in the contemporary design world.
Springer is often credited with reviving the art of applying skins to furniture, a practice long associated with French Deco masters including Jean Michel Frank, Jean Dunand, and Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann. The exclusive Todd Merrill Studio reissued pieces exemplify the artist’s penchant for creating bold sculptural designs that are as beautiful as they are functional.
The Free Form Low Table was the first of many pieces reissued under the gallery’s exclusive representation of Karl Springer LTD. Originally created in the 1970s, the Free Form Low Table is one of Springer’s most iconic designs in his extensive body of work. Individually, or grouped together, these tables showcase the versatility and elegant playfulness of Springer’s timeless minimal forms, luxury materials, and design sensibility.
In 2016, as the vintage market for Springer’s designs began exceeding the pieces’ original prices, Eckman, an admirer of Merrill’s intuition and experience in the vintage and custom design marketplace, approached the gallery to give it the exclusive right to reissue some of Springer’s classics. Merrill has selected original designs whose glamour and elegant simplicity have withstood the test of time.
Karl Springer LTD continues the legacy of its namesake founder, who spent the 1960s and 1970s producing custom-made designs known for their exacting craftsmanship. The reissued collection is made entirely in the United States by some of the same artisans who worked alongside Springer himself.
