Gio Ponti, Amethyst Pyramid Chandelier, Italy, ca. 1958
Italian designer Gio Ponti designed this chandelier, comprised of amethystย glass dodecahedrons for the New York ticket office of Alitalia, located at 666 Fifth Avenue, in 1958. In the late 1950’s Ponti, inspired by crystalline forms, often incorporated hexagons, diamonds, and rhomboids in his designs. The interior design for Alitalia’s offices was one of Ponti’s most famous projects. This chandelier has pale amethyst glass which hangs in four tiers from an original brass frame – which makes this chandelier so rare as both the glass and frame is original.
