Erik Speer, Pair of Swivel Chairs, 2024

One of the earliest forms of human craft, textile is a universal language, both essential and accessory. For the past eight years nomadic artist Erik Speer has been creating experimental fiber art collages that employ an array of techniques – macrame, crotchet, knitting, felting, weaving, etc. Thoughtfully detailed and expressive, his sculptural “tapestries” are naturally evocative and deeply rooted in his personal narrative.

His first works of collectible design, introduced in 2024, is a pair of one-of-a-kind chairs upholstered in his signature woven, knit, and crocheted assemblages, at the upcoming Design Miami LA opening May 16. For nearly a decade, Erik Speer has been crafting experimental fiber art collages using techniques such as macrame, crochet, knitting, felting, and weaving. His detailed and expressive sculptural “tapestries” are deeply rooted in his personal narrative. Originally from Roswell, New Mexico, Speer’s fascination with the ocean began in South Carolina, where a biology teacher sparked his interest through field trips and scuba diving experiences. Despite initially pursuing a career in medicine, he realized office life wasn’t for him and became a diving instructor, teaching in various countries.

Feeling restless in marine biology, Speer moved to New York City to study fashion design at Parsons. Unsatisfied with traditional fashion design, he explored macrame and fiber arts. Inspired by his ocean experiences, Speer uses his art to share the underwater world. His pieces, resembling coral reefs, feature woolen wall hangings interspersed with shapes reminiscent of barnacles and sea urchins. Speer emphasizes the use of natural materials, including recycled fibers and yarns. His construction methods include knotting, knitting, crocheting, braiding, and weaving, pushing the boundaries of his medium.
