Markus Haase, Sthenos Console, DE, 2025
The Sthenos Console by Markus Haase will debut at NOMAD Saint Moritz in February 2025.ย The exhibition will highlight the striking, sculptural works of German master craftsman Markus Haase, including a monumental hand-carved and hand cast bronze circlet chandelier and this handcarved blackened console with bronze feet. Haaseโs work, influenced by both classical and modern European sculptors, combines multiple materialsโstone, wood, and metalโinto cohesive, powerful forms that resonate with a sense of timeless beauty and bold expression. Haase is one of the few artists living today to create all of his work by his own hand. The title of the console is derived from the Gorgon sisters in Greek mythology which included Sthenos, Medusa and Euryale. Haase developed the Medusa and Euryale chandeliers in the fall of 2024.
In 2013, Haase launched his first series of sculptural design exclusively with Todd Merrill Studio. Since then, his work has attracted the attention of designers, critics, and collectors worldwide. Haase creates unique works of art, sculptural pieces of furniture, and lighting designย that demonstrateย his sculpting virtuosity through his works that imbue wood, metal, and stone with a remarkable sense of fluidity and movement. Carved wood and marble assume the qualities of drapery, while his dexterity in combining these elements with dynamic LED technology defines a new artistry for the twenty-first century. As Todd Merrill describes, โMarkus Haase is not making a piece of furniture or lighting that looks like artโฆ He is a sculptor making art that serves functional ends.โ
As Haase works on a commission basis, custom designs may be requested.
