“Galaxy II” Monumental Standing Cabinet, by Michael Coffey, USA, 2011
A monumental eight-door standing cabinet in American Black Walnut designed and hand-carved by Michael Coffey. This outstanding piece of sculptural furniture may be the masterpiece of artist Michael Coffey’s oeuvre. This is the largest three-dimensional cabinet he has yet created which has allowed Coffey a huge canvas to fully express his art. The case is subtly concave in the front and slightly tapered from base to top on all sides. This slight of proportion gives this massive architectural piece a grace not usually found in large scale furniture. The finish of the American Walnut has been specially formulated for this piece. The walnut retains a raw look yet it is fully sealed – the effect is almost cerused – a beautifully light warm color that fully reveals the grain of the wood that so compliments Coffey’s carving.
The cabinet is divided into two cases that are bolted together with eight sections, each of which has three adjustable shelves inside. Each of the eight four inch thick door opens 180 degrees on custom Soss hinges. The entire cabinet sits on a six inch custom made lucite base. This cabinet represents one of the finest examples of Michael Coffey’s hand-carving technique. This piece is unique as are each of Coffey’s hand made designs and can never be exactly reproduced.
