Paul Evans and Phillip Lloyd Powell, Pair of Wall-Mounted Walnut Shelves, USA, c. 1965
By Paul Evans
This one-of-a-kind pair of wall-mounted shelves from frequent collaborators Phillip Lloyd Powell and Paul Evans showcases each’s unique perspective and uncompromising skill. The live-edge walnut shelves are supported Powell’s sinuously carved brackets with steel braces hand-forged and polychromed by Evans. Each support is gilded with 25 kt gold leaf on a red ground. The brutalist aesthetic of Evans’s steel braces creates a dynamic juxtaposition with Powell’s organic carving.ย
The partnership between Evans and Powell is one of the most noteworthy of the American post-war Craft Movement. While each had very distinct strengths and viewpoints, the works they created together areย some of the most sought-after pieces of mid-century design.
