T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, Bleached Mahogany Table, USA, 1961
A gorgeous custom bleached mahogany table or desk designed by T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings and built by Saridis of Athens. The table, featuring classical fretwork on its legs and apron, was designed by Gibbings in 1961 at the request of Philip Johnson for a Johnson-designed penthouse apartment and executive office in Toronto. The Greek furniture manufacturer Saridis produced a line of pieces for Gibbings, executing custom commissions like the pictured table. The Johnson-designed penthouse was built in a Mies van der Rohe building in Toronto for the Torno family and has historical designation as a rare example of modern architecture. The table has been restored to its original bleached finish.
