Maarten Vrolijk, Sakura Tree I, NL, 2026
Standing over six feet tall and produced in a limited edition of three, Sakura Tree marks Vrolijk’s first foray combining bronze and stone with his phenomenal Sakura glass, thereby expanding his multidisciplinary practice into new material territory. At the center of the work is a bronze tree whose branches are sculpted from real tree elements combined with knotted rope cast in bronze. The organic structure of the branches including the impression of the rope remains embedded in the final sculpture, preserving traces of the natural forms from which it originated. An alabaster base grounds the composition, creating a luminous contrast with the richly patinated bronze.
Hanging from the branches are “ornaments” from Vrolijk’s celebrated Sakura glass collection. They represent unique blossoms suspended in a moment of bloom. Each one possesses its own shape, color, and metallic surface, creating a shifting dialogue with the bronze. Together, the elements evoke a tree suddenly transformed: a natural structure animated by thousands of imagined blossoms.
Vrolijk’s works have been collected and exhibited in several renowned international museums including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Groninger Museum. Todd Merrill Studio is pleased to be the exclusive representative for Vrolijk’s work in the Americas.
