Mindy Horn, Hana II, USA, 2025
With Hana II, Mindy Horn continues her poetic exploration of strength, beauty, and transformation through form. Expanding on her earlier vessel Hana I, a delicate bowl adorned with hundreds of meticulously handbuilt flowers, Hana II reimagines that object in a new dimensionโas a wall-mounted piece. Here, the intimacy of the original is transposed into a spatial offering that invites both reflection and reverence.
Emerging from a radiant 22-karat gold leaf base, each porcelain flower is individually shaped and placed by hand, forming a constellation of fragility and persistence. The gilded surface glows with warmth, suggesting both sanctity and endurance. Hana II is not simply a decorative objectโit is a tactile meditation on resilience, a composition that speaks quietly but powerfully about transformation, identity, and grace.
The title Hana carries resonances across languages and culturesโgrace (Hebrew), flower (Japanese), one (Korean), work (Hawaiian), glow and radiance (Mฤori), the moon (Albanian), bliss (Arabic), and hope (Persian). Each meaning offers an entry point into Hornโs practice, where dualityโsoftness and strength, fragility and enduranceโis not a contradiction but a truth.
Hornโs work is born from a deep engagement with the nature of porcelain itself: a material both exacting and unpredictable. Her process involves multiple cycles of building and firing, welcoming transformation at every stage. Rather than pursuing perfection, Horn embraces asymmetry and irregularity as hallmarks of authenticity. Her forms often begin off-center and evolve organically, revealing the quiet tension between vulnerability and permanence.
In Hana II, the wall becomes both pedestal and canvasโa place where beauty is suspended and reframed. As with all of Hornโs work, the floral motif is not simply ornamental. It is emblematic of the human condition: how we grow, endure, and radiate, even in uncertainty.
