Ian Spencer, Pure Black Dining Table, UK, 2023
Todd Merrill Studio began representing Ian Spencer as one half of Yard Sale Project in 2011. Ian Spencer and Cairn Young together form Yard Sale Project, a unique force of talent in the world of design. Their one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture combined Youngโs highly accomplished technical designs with Spencerโs master craftsmanship. Though Yard Sale Project is no longer, Ian Spencer continues to produce one-of-a-kind, innovative designs that push the limits of traditional furniture making.
His recent dining table draws inspiration from an earlier design called the Palombaggia Low Table from 2015. The dining table inherits certain elements from the Palombaggia Low Table, specifically in its design approach. One of the most striking features is the hand-carved legs, which seem to have grown organically, resembling the sturdy trunks of a tree. This natural aesthetic adds an intriguing dimension to the table, as if it were a harmonious integration of nature and artistry. The legs, meticulously crafted byย Spencer, showcase his exceptional skill and attention to detail. What sets the dining table apart is the dynamic and animated quality it possesses. Each angle of the asymmetrical base presents a distinct form, lending the table a sense of movement and vitality. The legs are artfully positioned in various ways, creating a visually captivating composition. This deliberate arrangement gives the table a sense of life, as if it is a living entity with legs posed in different stances, ready to support the tabletop with grace and strength.
Spencer’s works reside in prestigious collections around the world and have been exhibited at art fairs and museums including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, New York; the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and the Bellevue Arts Museum in Bellevue, Washington.
