Phillip Lloyd Powell Hand-Carved Armchair,ย Circa 1960s, USA
A beautifully proportioned armchair in Walnut with light grey calfskin upholstery. This chair is a prime example of Powell’s sensitivity towards wood and displays his talent for quality construction techniques. Blind mortise and tenon joinery and a hand-carved pass through for the upholstered back cushion all display Powell’s high level of craftsmanship. A similar example is documented in Todd Merrill and Julie Iovine, Modern Americana: Studio Furniture From High Craft to High Glam, Rizzoli, 2008 p. 107. This particular chair has been reupholstered in leather.
