Gary Magakis, Blackened Steel and Layered Bronze Console, USA, 2018
Gary Magakis’ unique steel and textured, layered bronze console epitomizes the sculptor’s distinct approach to creating bold and dense geometric forms that simultaneously exude an elegant, buoyant aesthetic of Modernism. At once a functional case piece and work of art, the console is designed to float in the room and be experienced from every angle.
Inspired by Constructivism and Modernist cantilevered houses, Gary Magakis channels architectural elements in design while tapering each of his forms uniquely. Though each of the console’s sections appear sharp at first glance, they are actually gracefully curvilinear, as the entire piece lacks any straight lines or edges. Magakis’ cantilevered cabinets allow the taut 4-door console to float; this levity, which further contrasts to the steel and bronze, renders the piece at ideal aesthetic equilibrium.
As Magakis works on a commission basis, custom dimensionality and finished may be requested.
